Juicy Campus

So I know this is technically not a news site, but I had to post on this because I couldn’t believe it existed.

Juicy Campus is an anonymous beta forum where people can post heinous gossip about people on campuses around the country. I first heard about it from a friend at Dook, and then I realized you can search for other campuses from Pepperdine to yes, UNC.

While the site doesn’t seem that active at UNC, yet, I have already noticed some hateful posts. Many of the posts, however, seem to be made by students at other schools since they insult Tyler Hansborough. One post mistakenly identifies sororities at Duke as sororities at UNC.

It seems to be an anonymous forum for Perez Hilton-wannabes, and it makes me nervous.

Obviously, anonymous posts lack credibility, but that doesn’t mean the word isn’t out there. In fact, once a post is up, users can not delete it. The only option is to either reply or apply a “thumbs down” sign. Oh and the site suggests taking it “with a grain of salt.”

I know I wouldn’t want my name on there at all. And if your name shows up, you have no way of knowing who posted the comment.

How could this affect life on campus? Does campus life really need to be any more catty?

  1. I think facebook provides enough of an outlet for students to break out in catfights day and night. While facebook is pinned as a networking tool and offers other features to let others ‘get to know each other,’ this website seems to have no other point than to take blind swings at anyone around. It’s basically like the DTH’s kvetching board without boundaries!

  2. Ewww, I do not like the idea of this site at all. I could see people not only spilling gossip on there but also making up nasty rumors just for fun since it could be done anonymously. Even if everyone knows it’s to be taken with a grain of salt, let’s be honest, a juicy story will pique your interest and make you wonder whether it stems from truth. The inability to delete posts is a red flag to me as well. I hope this doesn’t catch on at UNC.

  3. I think this is technically illegal as well, since you only have to publish something for it to be considered libelous and slander. People think they’re posting anonymously, when in reality it’s tracked to their IP.

There’s a fine line between name calling and slander.

  4. Juicy Campus doesn’t really scare me because it seems like the only people who would be on there anyway are people whose opinion I really don’t care about. If a facebook application doing the same thing caught on though, that would be creepy. I definitely think that just having that application would be a mark of shame though, in my opinion.

  5. I’ll second that I hope this doesn’t catch on at UNC, especially with the whole google phenomemon and people checking your name out before hiring you for a job. Those of us with highly “googleable” names can especially relate to that.
